Patient Testimonies | February 6, 2025
Hello, my name is Gloria Dralla and I am a retired attorney from Los Altos, California. Since 2020, I have been dealing with obesity and have been actively trying to lose weight through all means possible.
Through medical consultation with my doctor, we decided that I should go on the medication Wegovy to help with my weight loss goals. Unfortunately, I soon came to realize that my Wegovy prescription would cost me $1,600 a month out-of-pocket in the United States. Who can afford that?
While vacationing in Europe last year, I decided to see if I could purchase Wegovy with my prescription note, and it was successful and shocking. I learned that I could get a month’s worth of Wegovy for $250 in Italy, which was a huge discount off the price I would have paid here in the states.
This price difference was significant and eye-opening, making me wonder why such a huge price discrepancy existed between the U.S. and other countries. As it looks like for now, it is cheaper for me to travel out of the country and get my medication internationally rather than using my health insurance. But it shouldn’t be this way.
America needs more affordable prescription drug prices because 40% of all adult Americans are obese. This drug has been a game changer for me. I have tried other weight loss programs but nothing works as well as Wegovy. We need price reform now.
